Being Multi-Passionate

As a multi-passionate person, someone that likes to do “all the things.” I have an overly ambitious list of goals to accomplish in different areas of life, including two very different BIG career dreams that I want NOW, and sometimes I find it hard to focus on one thing at a time because I get so excited about all the different ideas that I get.

For one, I get bored or burnt out from just writing one thing at all times.  But I also feel more productive when I’m getting multiple things done.  Being able to cross things off of my TO DO list is the ultimate satisfaction for me.

But when I focus on one thing at a time, I get it done SO MUCH FASTER.

So after accomplishing my goal of completing a novel in one month I was reminded of one thing.  When I put all my focus on one thing, I get it done in record time. To have something finished is in actuality the ULTIMATE satisfaction.  Which led me to a conclusion.  Once a month I will choose ONE GOAL and give it my all.

Sure, I’ll have other goals that I’m working on, but I’ll have a strict deadline on one thing to accomplish in that month.  Working at a snail’s pace on multiple things at once, isn’t the most satisfying or encouraging thing for me.  I like to see the end result.

I’m the type of person that lists, thirty things I want to get done in a day, and then feel so disappointed in myself that I was unable to accomplish it.  It’s tough when you want to move and take inspired action as a creative.  So my challenge to myself, and to you other multi passionate people like me, is focus on one thing at a time.

Tony Robbins says that if you have more than 3-5 goals, you don’t have any because you’re not working on any to accomplish them.

So to help you choose what to focus on, think about your dream.  The vision you have for your life.  What steps must you take, what goals must you accomplish to get you there?  And so, focus on one goal at a time until you get it done.

To actually achieve your dreams, you can only pursue one at a time.  “Energy flows to where attention goes,” maybe focusing on one dream at a time is the way to go.  It may work for you, it may not.  I don’t know yet, if it’ll work for me.  But, that is my focus for this month, going all in on a single goal for the month, then moving on to the next major goal the next month.  If you give yourself a tight deadline, and no excuses, you’ll get it done.   I do know that when I split my attention, my focus and energy is also split, meaning I’m less likely to make much progress, as quick as I want.

Focus requires choosing one thing. It may be tough at the beginning to commit to only one area when you’re passionate about growth.  I’m choosing to think of it like this.  If tiny rocks fall into water, the water moves around. If a boulder falls into water the impact is much more powerful.  Think of the boulder as your specific focus or energy in one area.  Results are much better right?

I’ll keep you posted on my results, and best of luck on finding your focus and taking action on it!
